Q & A
All your Journey Beyond travel questions answered.
If I don’t want to (or can’t) access a top bunk, is booking Platinum the only option for a couple? We’re looking forward to travelling, but neither of us can get up into a top bunk comfortably.
–Maree
We totally understand your concern about accessing a top bunk during your journey. While Platinum does provide the convenience of ground-level beds, we also have a few alternatives. There is a limited number of Gold Suites, for instance, which still have bunks, but the lower bed is a train-sized double bed. There is also an Access Cabin with twin ground-level beds, which is allocated on a needs basis. We recommend calling our Travel Centre to discuss the options when you’re ready to book.
I saw that last year you did a whale-watching tour with Rottnest Express. Are you going to do that again this year? We’ll be in Perth in July.
–Renee
We will have a whale-watching tour scheduled for this year, but the migration season runs between September and the start of November. You’ll be able to book from August. We do offer some other exciting experiences on Rottnest Island during July, like snorkelling and seaplane tours. Take a look at the Rottnest Express website or contact our team for more information on tours and activities during your visit.
I’m interested in experiencing some Indigenous tours. Does Journey Beyond offer anything like this on their train journeys? Which train has the most Indigenous experiences?
–Cody
We offer a range of Indigenous-related experiences across our routes, with The Ghan offering the most extensive range of Indigenous experiences. These include guided tours, exploring sacred sites, and discovering the art and craftsmanship of Indigenous artists. One of our favourites is the Nitmiluk Rock Art Cruise on the northbound Ghan or the Standley Chasm Cultural Walk in Alice Springs. If you want to dive further into Indigenous experiences, take a look at some of our holiday packages that include The Ghan and touring with Outback Spirit, in places like the Red Centre or Arnhem Land – or both.
I want to visit Reefworld, but I can’t swim. Am I still allowed to go?
–Andy
This is a great choice for a Great Barrier Reef experience. Cruise Whitsundays’ Reefworld pontoon makes for a fantastic day out, or even better, an overnight stay in one of our glamping pods on the upper deck or an underwater Reefsuite. You are absolutely still allowed to visit, whether you can swim or not. There are lots of ways to enjoy the reef, including a semi-submersible tour, the underwater observatory, and guided snorkelling tours with experienced instructors providing support for non-swimmers. Our crew are on hand to ensure every guest feels comfortable and can immerse themselves in the extraordinary beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, regardless of swimming ability.
II’m gluten-free. Can you cater for that on the Indian Pacific?
–Brie
We definitely can. Our on-board culinary team is well-equipped to cater for dietary needs, including gluten-free. The best thing to do is to inform us of your dietary preferences when making your booking, so we can provide delectable meals throughout your journey.
I really want to go to Arnhem Land with Outback Spirit – the tour looks amazing – but I have arthritis and I can’t walk long distances. Would the tour be too active for me?
–Sue
Our Outback Spirit tours are designed to cater for a wide range of abilities and interests. While you will need a certain level of fitness to participate in the walks, they vary in length – including shorter walks up to 400m, and longer walks and hikes that range from 2 to 5km. Every walk is optional, though, so you can decide what you feel able to do and our guides will help with information and alternatives, based on your physical abilities and preferences. As long as you can climb the few stairs into our comfortable coaches (with handrails to assist), you’ll enjoy the tour. Please do talk to our team about your specific needs when booking so we can accommodate you accordingly.
What’s the range of non-alcoholic beverages on board the trains? Do you also have decaf coffee? (I promise I’m not as boring as these questions suggest!)
–Bridget
Great questions – and not boring at all. We offer a wide variety of non-alcoholic options, from non-alcoholic wine, to sparkling water, soft drinks and juices. And yes, our on-board baristas will happily whip up a decaffeinated coffee. We also have a range of herbal teas available.
I’m thinking about proposing to my girlfriend during our stay at Sal Salis. Can you arrange a private dinner on the beach and maybe help me by delivering the ring with some champagne?
–Jarad
This is exciting news! Our team at Sal Salis would love to help you plan a special private dinner on the beach. They can assist you in arranging a romantic setting, and make sure it’s personalised to make your proposal absolutely unforgettable.
