MY TRAVEL JOURNEY

Beyond the Falls

Lizzie Hoo recounts her epic journey to one of Western Australia’s most alluring destinations.

WORDS Lizzy Hoo

Holidays are often so well-researched before the flights are even booked. What’s the easiest way to get somewhere? Is it better to fly or catch a bus? What is a stranger on the internet rating this trip out of five? But no amount of googling can prepare you for a visit to Horizontal Falls (Gaaraangadim) in the Kimberley.

The Horizontal Falls are located off the coast of the Kimberley region in Western Australia. You get there by seaplane – you know, the planes with the big skis? Hot tip – if you get offered the seat next to the pilot up front – take it! The view from above will be hardwired into your core holiday memories; the way the veiny water system bleeds into the land, the rolling green hills, a cow here and there, the trademark colour palette of the Kimberley with its dusty pinks, bright blues, every variation of green and rich ochre … it all feels very otherworldly.

I’m blown away already, and then the pilot says “Just wait for it…” and we take a turn and cut through dramatic red cliffs on either side of us and we’re met with the most beautiful turquoise water of Talbot Bay (Ganbadba). It’s very Top Gun meets outback Australia, which is actually not a bad idea, Hollywood. Thank me later. In the distance, there’s a white landing – it’s this mysterious pontoon everyone keeps talking about. “We’ll land at the pontoon, we’ll have lunch on the pontoon, we’re staying on the pontoon.” In my head a pontoon is on the side of the river, it’s small, it’s something you might sit on with an Esky and cast a line off. This pontoon is a little different – it’s much bigger, is surrounded by water and is the epicentre of all activity on the bay. Seaplanes are flying in, boats are coming and going along with a constant stream of lucky visitors with huge grins.

The epic pontoon in talbot bay

The seaplane lands on the water directly next to the pontoon, which is such an incredible experience. 10/10 great park. We’re set up with a few rules – number one being don’t jump in the water. It’s warm outside but here’s the thing with this part of the world, the water looks beautiful, but beneath its glistening surface are sharks… and crocs. But, what if I told you the sharks were super cute and there were feeding cages off the pontoon where you could get up close and personal with them?

And the crocs aren’t that close to the pontoon – they live out in the river systems feeding the bay and you can go and try and find them on a boat cruise. One of the highlights of the trip was listening to one of the incredible staff recite I Love A Sunburnt Country with the sound of his voice bouncing off the surrounding cliff faces and a few crocodiles popping up every so often to have a listen. But the main attraction… drum roll please… the one luring visitors from all corners of the globe is the Horizontal Falls. Sir David Attenborough even calls them one of the world’s greatest natural wonders and it’s easy to see why. This is the bit that’s hard to describe because it’s a bit scientific and, look, I’m a comedian. Here goes – the name comes from the water movement created by tidal flows from the sea. The water forces meet in between two narrow gaps in the McLarty Ranges. To me, it looked like two competing waves crashing into each other with incredible force.

Many choose to day trip to the falls but if you can, I would recommend staying overnight. Watch the sunset over the ranges, feed the friendly sharks and be treated to a delicious local barramundi dinner. This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, so stay and make the most of it.
