A Great Southern Adventure

WORDS Clare MacDonell

My parents and I travelled on the Great Southern from Adelaide (Tarndanya wama) to Brisbane (Meanjin) in 2024. We had watched YouTube videos of others doing the various Journey Beyond train trips but didn’t fully know what to expect. I was a little worried I wouldn’t fit in being only 24 years old, but that was not the case at all. From the moment we arrived at Adelaide Parklands Terminal, we were swept into a world of wonderful hospitality with endless food, drinks and new friends. On the first day, we met a lovely gentleman; John, who was travelling on his own. He became the 4th person in our group as it turned out he was in the same carriage as us and was on all the same Off Train Experiences. Even the staff noticed this as every time they checked us off and, on the train, they checked the four of us as a group. This was a nice touch and showed that the staff really do take the time to get to know you. There were so many highlights of the trip, it’s hard to name just a few but the drinks at the top of the Boroka Lookout in the Grampians were so amazing, as was the lunch at Old Parliament House in Canberra. We are still sharing stories with our family and friends to this day and have our next journey; The Indian Pacific booked for January 2025 and are planning to do The Ghan with our friends next year as well.
