Falling for the Kimberley

WORDS Kelly and Camille Paten

After years of dreaming of visiting Horizontal Falls (Garaangaddim), we finally got our chance. We took off on a lap around Australia in our caravan from the east coast, all the way to Broome (Yawuru). There are lots of tour options through Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures, we choose the half day afternoon tour from Broome where we could make the most of the scenic flight. Our tour included transfers, an hour and half seaplane flight over the stunning Dampier Peninsula and Buccaneer Archipelago Islands before arriving into Talbot Bay (Ganbadba) where you fly above the Falls and get your first glance at the sheer size and force of the water rushing through the falls. Landing in Talbot Bay in the Seaplane was a highlight of the trip – we came in between two mountains and could see the brilliant turquoise waters below. Reaching the pontoon, it was straight onto the jet boats for a thrilling ride through the falls to optimise the tides times. After a buffet lunch and an opportunity to watch the fish and shark feeding it was back on the seaplane as we take off and flew above the falls one last time. We honestly couldn’t fault the day from the attention to detail and expertise of the staff, it really made for an excellent day out in the Kimberley.
